Dosbarth Onnen’s Sherman Theatre Workshop

We were very lucky in Dosbarth Onnen to welcome Anita from the Sherman Theatre to school this week.

First we played some warm up games in the storytelling circle.

“We had to say random words and throw a ball.” ECC

IMG_4215 IMG_4213

Next we used our imaginations to picture a woodland.

IMG_4227 IMG_4226

“Anita helped us to use our imagination. She told us to imagine that a hot air balloon came by your window. She said the balloon is flying to a woodland and you can see anything that you want. I chose to see a giant spider spinning a web in between two trees.” AE

Then we went on a hunt around the garden using our senses.

IMG_4228 IMG_4222

“We used our senses. We looked for things we could smell and touch and things we could hear.” EB

“I enjoyed looking at nature and feeling nature” AW

IMG_4211

Finally, we made a story together using all of our ideas.

We all really enjoyed her visit!

“I liked how Anita talked about theatres” OB

I liked my ideas that there were four waterfalls and they go down into a big lake. There were cranes all surrounding it.” TB

“I enjoyed when we went around the garden and smelt and felt flowers” JF

This week has been My Money Week at BIPS! Each class has participated in a range of activities and projects to raise awareness of handling and managing money. The week has allowed our children to participate in an entrepreneurial challenge. Miss Cadman has given each class £10 and challenged them to ‘grow’ their balance. Keep and eye out at our School Fayre on Saturday for the products on sale as our classes battle to be the best entrepreneurs. We have had talks from Barclays Bank and Credit Union and would like to thank them for visiting classes.

Our Super STEM Trip to NASA

Screen Shot 2015-06-09 at 18.11.06

Mr Broad and Miss Cadman worked with I.S.S.E.T, St Jospeph’s Primary School and Evenlode Primary School to give Dosbarth Derw the exciting opportunity to visit Kennedy Space Centre! Those who attended enjoyed an action-packed week of learning all about space exploration and seeing the sights of Florida as part of the astronaut-training programme.

The trip was organised to improve STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Maths). In the classroom the atmosphere is electric as everybody looks back on our amazing opportunity.

Before we took part in the Junior Astronaut Training programme, Mr Broad invited Science Burp to teach us about astronaut food in class. We tried freeze-dried space food (it was surprisingly tasty!)

We tried freeze dried fruit and veg!

image

In class we have learnt to use green screens as part of our Film Club project. We used these skills and pretended to be real astronauts! We even made a thank you video to our sponsors using the animate funcction on J2E and greenscreen.

We would like to give a HUGE thanks to our sponsors Scholastic, Cornerstones and 5-a-day for helping us reach for the stars with their generous donations!

We got together with our partner schools during the build up to the trip and participated in a range of Space themed lessons. We even designed our own mission badge, just like the real astronauts!

…We were even in the local news!

#SpaceCamp15 Mission Log: Day 1 – Travelling to USA

Early on a Saturday morning, 10 very tired children from Barry Island Primary and their 4 new friends waved their parents goodbye as they set off on an adventure of a lifetime.

Our adventure began on a very long trip to Heathrow Airport to catch our first plane.       While at Heathrow we enjoyed our last British Breakfast, before flying to Chicago. From there we took a shorter flight to Orlando, Florida.

Day 2- Arriving at Kennedy Space Centre

Screen Shot 2015-06-09 at 18.22.15

On our first action-packed day we took a trip to Kennedy space centre. We explored the rocket garden and looked at the history of rockets. We visited the famous Rocket Garden to visit discarded and refurbished rockets previously used by NASA.

Screen Shot 2015-06-09 at 18.11.31

Later that day we went to the Atlantis space shuttle! We loved seeing the shuttle; it was an amazing photo opportunity! We then buckled up and rode the Atlantis space shuttle simulator; it felt like you were traveling through space!!

Screen Shot 2015-06-09 at 18.21.11

Day 3 iFly Indoor Skydiving

The following day we visited iFly indoor skydiving. We wouldn’t begin our skydiving experience until we had learnt the physics behind the activity.

There was a chamber with huge fans underneath which lift you up! We felt like we were flying, this was the closest we would come to feeling weightless. And it was so much fun!

Screen Shot 2015-06-09 at 18.21.23 Screen Shot 2015-06-09 at 18.21.37

Day 4 – SeaWorld

On Tuesday we had an amazing day at SeaWorld Orlando!

We started our day with a visit to the Shamu stadium. We sat at the front rows, and got EXTREMELY wet! After that we visited the education centre to look at the different creatures, and got a glimpse behind the scenes at their rescue missions, including the lab and some rescued manatees! We finished that day with a ride on some of SeaWorld’s famous roller coasters.

Screen Shot 2015-06-09 at 18.20.57CB was interviewed as part of the show!

We enjoyed a behind the scenes education workshop with the vets of Sea World

We watched the ultrasound of a pregnant dolphin and visited the enclosure.

Day 5 – Merritt Island

A new day and a new adventure for BIPS! We went to Merritt Island Wildlife Park, and searched for alligators in the lagoons. We found some interesting creatures, but the best thing we found was a huge horseshoe crab!

Afterwards we went to another nearby lagoon and saw wild manatees up close!

We followed the instructions on the signs…VERY carefully!

After that amazing experience we went out for a meal but while we were there we saw more members of the NASA community. Jay Honeycutt is the former director of NASA’s John F. Kennedy Space Center and former software designer for the Apollo landings. He shared some words of wisdom and some simply unbelievable stories about perseverance and dedication.

Screen Shot 2015-06-09 at 18.13.18

Screen Shot 2015-06-09 at 18.12.55

We then ate our food with Jay and a shuttle designer and the lead investigator of the Columbia Shuttle disaster.

Screen Shot 2015-06-09 at 18.13.52

Our one-in-a-lifetime trip to Florida has inspired us to become more involved with STEM. One day we could be one of the first people to land on Mars!

Digital Literacy Week with ECadet Challenges

ecadet logo

The eCadets have been very busy this term ensuring we are all e-safety smart, making Henry @eCadets and @minieCadets They set challenges for the whole school during the digital literacy week to ensure all children and teachers stay safe whilst on line.

digital_literacy1

They started the week with an assembly showing the whole school the eCadet video about using technology. The facts were incredible. We couldn’t believe how many children use games on line each day. They then visited every classroom and shared a short film they had made about their ideas for internet safety rules.

Our mini eCadets set the challenge for Dosbart Ceirios to build a police station for Henry and the eCadets. Dosbarth Ceirios and Mesen have enjoyed role playing being Henry and checking everyone is being e-SMART. They also talked about how they feel when they receive an e-mail that uses kind words and drew a picture of how it made them feel. They then talked about what they liked to do on the computer with their friends and what they should remember to keep safe. They made a road sign for us to remember good behavior on line.

The eCadets have been educating keystage 2 about PEGI ratings. They worked collaboratively to devise rules for PEGI rating for ages 3, 7, 12 and 16. which will be shared with the whole school in an e-safety assembly after half term. They had great fun and enjoyed working with their friends. They then designed logo’s for different Pegi ratings.

They wanted to share these new skills and games with their buddies, and there is no better place than our very own BarryBados Beach.

The afternoon started well with a lovely walk to the beach and our first carousel of fun play activities started. We had time to shine in the sand with Miss. Cox, Hockey with Mrs. Evans, football with Mr. Smith and Super Star Challenges with Mr. Johnson.

The sky was blue, we were having great fun and then the clouds slowly drifted over, the winds picked up and the rain and hail began to fall. We did try to be optimistic and try again when it looked less grey but the thunder began and the hail turned into golf ball shaped hailstones. We showed Dosbarth Celyn how good we are at running, skipping and jumping through the rain and puddles (skills we have been developing throughout the topic) and we headed for the new shelter. The rain did ease and we decided to walk at pace back to school.

On reflection it was a great afternoon as we did have some fun and we got to spend time with our lovely buddies.   The year 4 children were a credit to the school and really showed a caring side to their characters, helping and praising them when they needed support. Da iawn Dosbarth Ceirios a Dosbarth Celyn. Besides, a bit of rain never hurt anyone, and as we say at Barry Island – whatever the weather!!!

whatever
